چکیده

Maxwell seems to have considered the great paper of L. Lorenz on retarded potentials [1] (published simultaneously in 1867 with a paper written in 1858 by B. Riemann on the same theme [2]) as insufficiently supportive of his vision of a dynamical theory of the electromagnetic field [3], whereas the present attitude is that Riemann and Lorenz made important contributions to the Maxwellian view. Maxwell made an objection [5] (p. 651) that if a pair of equal and opposite charges move collinearly, then the retarded potential experienced by the charge in front has smaller magnitude than that experienced by the charge in the rear because the former retarded distance is larger than the latter; hence, there must be a net electrical force on the system, which accelerates it without limit, providing an infinite source of free energy. Is Maxwell’s objection valid?

Instantaneous fields in classical electrodynamics

– In this paper we express the retarded fields of Maxwell’s theory in terms of the instantaneous fields of a Galilei-invariant electromagnetic and we find the vector function χL whose spatial and temporal derivatives transform the Euclidean fields into the retarded ones. We conclude that the instantaneous fields can formally be introduced as unphysical objects into classical electrodynamics whi...

Can the Lorenz-gauge potentials be considered physical quantities?

Two results support the idea that the scalar and vector potentials in the Lorenz gauge can be considered to be physical quantities: (i) they separately satisfy the properties of causality and propagation at the speed of light and do not imply spurious terms and (ii) they can naturally be written in a manifestly covariant form. In this paper we introduce expressions for the Lorenz-gauge potentia...

On the Solution of Maxwell’s First Order Equations

In an attempt to solve Maxwell’s first order system of equations, starting from a given initial state, it is found that a consistent solution depending on the temporal evolution of the sources cannot be calculated. The well known retarded solutions of the second order equations, which are based on the introduction of potentials, turn out to be in disagreement with a direct solution of the first...

Retarded potentials and the radiative arrow of time

Maxwell’s equations admit both retarded and advanced solutions, but only the retarded solutions seem to characterize the radiative phenomena that actually occur in nature. The reason for this, however, is not usually explained in electrodynamics textbooks. We justify the use of the retarded solutions by considering a simple toy model, which allows us to avoid the technical complexities of elect...

Potentials for a Hertzian Oscillating Dipole

1 Problem Give expressions for the potentials of a Hertzian (point) oscillating dipole in various gauges. The form of Maxwell's equations for the fields E and B permit these fields to be related to potentials V and A according to, E = −∇V − 1 c ∂A ∂t , B ∇ × A, (1) in Gaussian units, where c is the speed of light in vacuum, and the potentials obeys the wave equations, ∇ 2 V + 1 c ∂ ∂t ∇ · A = −...
